What is Hypnobirthing?
The techniques used in Hypnobirthing are designed to help women feel calm and in control of their labour, using self-hypnosis, relaxation and breathing. It has a number of benefits, including:
- A shorter first stage labour;
- Less intense pain sensations;
- A shorter stay in hospital;
- Less fear and anxiety following the birth;
- Reduced likelihood of instrumental interventions.
- Although we cannot promise you the perfect birth, we are sure you will have a birth that is more comfortable than you ever imagined!
How does Hypnobirthing work?
Hypnobirthing isn’t a form of pain relief, but it helps to set the body into the right motion for birthing. Even by just changing the language we use from contractions to surges, pushing to birth breathing, can dramatically alter how we see our birth unfolding.
Feelings of stress and fear cause the release of hormones such as adrenaline into our system. These hormones can trigger the ‘fight or flight’ response. Adrenaline also reduces blood flow to the uterus and digestive system, redirecting it to the large muscles in the limbs, making ‘fight or flight’ possible. This results in the uterine muscles working less efficiently, making the labour longer and harder.
Oxytocin is a hormone that is needed for birth, and endorphins are released to ease pain and make you feel positive. Adrenaline and other stress hormones can stop your body producing oxytocin, slowing labour down in the process.
Using Hypnobirthing to remove fear and stress allows the right balance of hormones to flow, helping your labour to progress more smoothly. Hypnobirthing can be used wherever you plan to give birth; at home, at a birthing centre or in a hospital.
What about my birthing partner?
Hypnobirthing is not just beneficial for mums-to-be. Whoever you choose to be with you when you give birth will learn alongside you. The birth partner can often feel like a spare part, unable to fully understand what is happening to you and feeling at a loss to help. Hypnobirthing gives the birth partner a central role, ensuring the environment is conducive to effective birth and guiding you in putting the techniques into practice, making them active and integral to your birthing journey.
